Addiction Treatment in Laguna Hills, California

Alcohol Detox and Addiction Treatment

ALCOHOLISM

Alcohol addiction is the most common substance abuse disorder in the United States.  According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 14.1 Million American adults suffered from Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).  However, only 6.5% of the people suffering from Alcohol Use Disorder receive treatment for their disorder.  An overwhelming amount of people suffer from untreated alcoholism.

Alcohol use is ever-present in American culture.  So many get-togethers and social interactions revolve around casual drinking.  In this environment, it can be difficult to tell who has a problem with alcohol and who is just drinking socially.  Most people find out that they are abusing alcohol to an unhealthy extent when they begin to experience consequences from their drinking. They may get a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge, get arrested for being drunk in public, or begin to ignore their responsibilities at work or in the home.  No matter where the pressure comes from, once a person realizes that they have a problem with alcohol and decide to get help, the first step to recovery is an alcohol detox.

In our Laguna Hills alcohol detox program, we support and clinically supervise our clients to help keep their withdrawal pains and symptoms under control.  This ensures that the alcohol detox process is efficient and safe.  With proper clinical supervision, we can minimize the risk of an alcoholic suffering a  relapse or overdose.

Alcohol Withdawls

ALCOHOL WITHDRAWALS

People who drink heavily for an extended period of time experience complications when they attempt to cut back or stop drinking entirely.  These symptoms are known as withdrawals.  The symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol can range from moderately unpleasant to deadly.  Because of the complications that can occur during the withdrawal process, an alcohol detox should always be supervised by treatment professionals.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms are the result of a person’s central nervous system readjusting after becoming dependent on alcohol.  These symptoms can begin to manifest a matter of hours after a person takes their last drink.  Moderate effects of withdrawal can include symptoms like shakiness, anxiety, headaches, nausea, and sweating.  These typically occur between 6 and 12 hours after an alcoholic’s last drink.

More severe symptoms typically manifest between 12 and 24 hours after the last drink.  These symptoms can include hallucinations, confusion, high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and fever.  During this phase of the withdrawal process, complications can occur.  Without professional supervision, a person in the throes of withdrawal can suffer from seizures, dehydration, and delirium tremens (DTs).  A person suffering from delirium tremens will experience vivid hallucinations and wild delusions.  This can make a person become a risk to themselves and others if they are not properly treated.  There are a series of medications and procedures that can make this process more safe and comfortable for the person experiencing the symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol and their loved ones.

Laguna Beach Medically Assisted Treatment for Addiction

MEDICATION ASSISTED ALCOHOL TREATMENT

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) can greatly benefit someone during the alcohol detox process.  In combination with behavioral therapy and support groups, medications can be used to reduce the risk of relapse, ease the symptoms of withdrawal, and reduce alcohol cravings.  A treatment professional will evaluate the patient to determine if Medication-Assisted Treatment is the right choice for them given their addiction history and experiences with treatment.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) serves different purposes at different points in the treatment process.  In the early stages of treatment, medications are used to ease withdrawal symptoms to keep the patient safe and comfortable.  Farther along the path to recovery, these treatments allow a recovering alcoholic to be more present and clear-headed so that they can focus on their addiction education and psychotherapy.

Patients who are more comfortable and focussed are able to become more engaged in the addiction treatment process and are more likely to stay in detox or rehab.  They are also more interested in participating in continuing care and aftercare programs.  This leads to increased success rates in recovery and a decrease in relapse rates.

Naltrexone is an FDA-approved medication used to treat alcohol addiction.  It is an opioid antagonist that blocks the effects of narcotics, but it has also proven to be successful in reducing alcohol cravings.  Naltrexone is typically taken once a day, orally and is administered by a healthcare professional.  It is also available in the form of a long-lasting injection called Vivitrol.
